Head Office

To manage large, complex and bandwidth demanding "head office" environments, this scenario depicts layer 3 managed, stackable, gigabit switches at the core, connected to mutiple edge switches, firewalls and servers. If required, 10gig fibre uplinks can be employed to provide 10 x gigabit throughput between the stack and a server farm for bandwidth-hungry user groups. The edge switches can be L3 too, but could also be more cost effective smart managed switches. Smart switches with built-in PoE power multiple wireless access points, VoIP phones and IP security cameras facilitating easier, flexible deployment, avoiding the constraint of only placing mobile devices near to AC sockets.

This network also supports VLANs and quality of service, enabling this organisation - for example - to prioritise voice traffic. The firewall supports IPSec VPN, to provide regional, branch and remote offices with secure, private access to resources held on servers at the head office. An SSL VPN Concentrator compliments the site-to-site IPSec VPN by providing mobile users with secure browser-based access to head office resources, without the need to load VPN client software on to every remote laptop.

Branch Office

Branch offices may operate more effectively with a degree of network management. 10/100 and gigabit smart managed switches provide suitable network management, without the costs associated with fully managed networks. All 10/100 models have a minimum of two gigabit ports and all smart switches come with optional fibre slots for high speed, long distance connectivity. Some 10/100 smart switch models also feature built-in PoE (Power over ethernet) to power wireless access points and VoIP telephones, avoiding the need to place these mobile devices near electrical sockets.

Wireless access points compliment the wired network by providing easy connectivity to hot-desking staff and visitors. A secure firewall provides internet access and IPSec VPN encrypted connectivity to head office resources.

Home Workers

For remote workers, Netgear offers secure access to company network and resources via VPN over the internet. Netgear's SSL VPN concentrator uses the "Secure Sockets Layer" encryption (used by e-commerce and bank websites to ensure confidential transactions) to provide secure web browser-based access to company resources.

For home workers, Netgear's latest wireless broadband routers and adapters enable home workers to wirelessly connect to the internet from any room in the house.
